Your Love from Afar Challenge: Week 3

(We are a few days behind, but better late than never, right guys?)

Monday- What do you do for date nights?

When you are together, what are your favorite date night spots?

When you are apart what do you do for dates?

When we were together, we did lots of things for date nights! We watched movies either at home or at the cinema. We played games on the Wii or our 3DS consoles. We loved to try new restaurants wherever we were and to take a nice stroll afterwards. We also loved to have day dates when we would do some sightseeing (especially in London and DC) or when we would have breakfast out during the weekend. Whatever it was, we were just happy to do it together. 🙂

Our top 3 date night spots so far are:

1. Mud Crab Cafe in Manchester, UK
2. Gourmet Burger Kitchen in Canary Wharf, London
3. Brew Dog in Manchester, UK

We haven’t totally mastered the date-while-apart thing yet, but any suggestions are welcome!

PS Do Skype dates count?

Your Love from Afar Challenge: Week 2

Wednesday- What role does music play in your relationship? Do you feel like it brings you together? What are some things you both do together that involve music?

At the beginning of our relationship, we used music to share feelings we were a bit too scared to voice ourselves. One time, we spent the whole night playing music to each other. We each took turns choosing songs that expressed how we felt about each other. When Richard played me Travis’ “Flowers in the Window,” I knew we were something special.

As our relationship grew, listening to music became something we both liked to do when we were hanging out after dinner or doing chores around our flat/apartment. Music has definitely played a part in bringing us together, especially when we reminisce about our time together. We often listen to a song on our way to work or on our drives here and there, and it brings back a beautiful memory and of course, we have to text each other! Music is something that we really treasure. 🙂

Your Love from Afar Challenge Week 1

Friday- Do you enjoy being in a long distance relationship? Is your outlook positive or negative?

We think “enjoy” is a bit too strong of a word there, haha! Although we know in our hearts that we will not only survive but also thrive in this LDR, it’s obviously not our first choice scenario, shall we say. Especially because we lived with each other for some time before we started our LDR. But we would take this over breaking up with each other any day of our lives. We love each other so much that distance isn’t a good enough reason for us to break it all off.

There is no doubt that our outlook on our LDR and our relationship in general is positive. Lately, we have been having a lot of conversations about our future between ourselves and with our families. So, as far as we’re concerned, we’re in it for the long haul!

Your Love from Afar Challenge: Week 1 Day 2

Wednesday- What are peoples initial reactions to you being in a long distance relationship? Does it bother you? Have you found people who are supportive?

Cat: For the most part, I have to say, everyone’s initial reactions have been overall supportive. There has been the occasional but expected comments of “Wow, isn’t that going to be tough? Are you guys really ready for that?” I think these questions are pretty natural, and so they don’t bother me.

What’s really special is that Richard’s grandma was in a LDR with Richard’s grandpa back in the day, long before modern technology. All they could do was write each other letters and wait weeks to hear from each other since Richard’s grandma lived in Wales and his grandfather lived in California. She’s been a real source of support and guidance for us. She and her late husband (RIP GP) are truly an inspiration for us.

Richard: Yeah, I would say people’s reactions have been mostly positive. I’d never say anyone was negative. I think it was more that they were worried about how we would cope with being apart all while having the mindset that we make each other happy. I understand their views, and it’s only what I think most people would think. So, it doesn’t upset me.

Your Love from Afar Week 1 Day 1

Monday-Tell us your story.

How far are you? How old are you both? Where do you both live? How long have you been together? Do you have any future plans? Have you visited each other yet?

—————————————————————————

Richard (25) and I (24) are 3,662 miles apart, as he lives in London and I live in Washington DC.

So, the Reader’s Digest version of our story is:

We met on OKCupid in August 2012, right before I moved to Manchester, UK to pursue my master’s. After talking all day, everyday for about a month, Richard asked me out on our first date, and since we were connecting in such an amazing way, I said yes. It was such a wonderful date; the best first date I’ve ever been on. He even baked a Victorian sponge cake that day and brought along slices for dessert!

A few days later, on September 24, 2012, we went on our second date and became official.

(If you guys want the full version, let me know, and I’ll make a full post of it!)

We’ve been together ever since, and we plan to stay together for the rest of our lives. 🙂

We started our LDR the day I had to travel home because my student visa for the UK was almost up, and unfortunately I couldn’t find full-time, sponsored employment in the UK. That was on January 27th of this year. So, we’ve been in a LDR for a little over a month now. We still haven’t visited each other because I have been traveling for the past month, and Richard has been working full-time and settling into his new flat.

But Richard is planning to come visit me in DC some time in late September! I could not be more excited!!

We got tagged by aneonaway – thanks, you guys!!

1.Why did you choose your url?

Cat: It really just seemed like the most natural title for us. This blog is about two people in love (hearts) who live on opposite sides of the Atlantic (across the pond). So there it is, haha! I’m just lucky the URL wasn’t taken!

2. What’s your middle name?

Cat: Rosa, after my maternal grandma

Richard: Leslie

3. If you could own a fairy tale/fictional pet what would it be?

Cat: Hands down, Hedwig.

Richard: A lion-sized domestic cat.

4. Favorite Color?

Cat: Purple

Richard: Blue

5. Favorite song?

Cat: I don’t have a favorite song! I can’t have a favorite song because I love too many artists from too many different genres and eras.

Richard: November Rain – Guns n Roses

6. What are your top 3 fandoms?

Cat: Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and Breaking Bad

Richard: Umm, don’t know if these have fandoms so I’m just gonna guess here: South Park, Family Guy, and American Dad

7. Why do you enjoy Tumblr?

Cat: I love to see what people post because 9/10, it moves me in such a positive way. In particular to the LDR community, I definitely feel the love and support, knowing that I’m not the only one in a LDR.

Richard: It’s such a good community and you get to interact with tons of people.
